Having the same synths makes you sound the same as your favorite producers about as much as having the same guitar as Jimi Hendryx makes you sound like Jimi Hendryx!
It gets said constantly yet some remain suspicious like it's just to throw them off the path. Perhaps a gearslutz PSA mass email could be sent out? Mastering does NOT make a record sound great. It's the icing on the cake of an already great sounding recording/mix.
you could certainly upgrade your converters though for the purpose of better monitoring and recording if you use outboard synths. If you want to spend around $2k the Hilo is unbeatable and certainly a whole other realm than RME. Nice monitors come before that. Some room treatment also to at least help with corner bass & first reflection points. Same shit people always say on this topic.
It all begins at the source though and there's no substitute for experience. If you want to sound like guys who have been doing it far longer than you you're going to have to work at it.
