I recently was asked to solve a problem in a 'student' film with the sound when shown in a theatre, in a couple of scenes the subs in the theatre where hardly working and in scenes that needed them..... well the problem was the phase errors caused by an over wide M/S panning in the mix down, and once it been finally mixed the problems are there FOREVER.
Most feeds to the sub speaker system is a mono of L+C+R or L+R with a top end roll off.
I will agree these days there are a lot less pure mono sources than there was years ago but the mix still needs to 'sit right' in mono.
