I'd say mono is important for many delivery devices. Listen to music on your smartphone and describe the stereo separation. Also for those people who put one speaker on top of the other... Ha. I'm no expert, but I always check what a mix sounds like in mono just cause, for phase difference. My rule of sum (ahaha) is if it sounds better/ less bad in mono, something's wrong with the panning
