LDC's can sound great on Toms, try a Mono OH style setup sitting above the front of the kit. Pair that with a nice XY or spaced pair and you can get a really good representation of the kit. I recently was doing pre-production for the band and got a pretty good kit sound with just a single RM700 as my OH and an Opus 99 for the kick drum. A little high shelf and it was good to go!
Do not attempt to compress unless you have a decent monitoring setup. A limiter can help to prevent clipping should something happen, but always be conservative with gainstaging for drums - I often leave 12 or more dB for when the drummer REALLY warms up.
Borrow decent headphones, listen between takes - do short bursts until you think you're happy with the sound. Record. Stop. Listen. Adjust. Record. Stop. Listen. Repeat until you're happy.
