To be fair, there's simply no "right" way. There just isn't.

Getting the balances before EQ only makes sense if the EQ isn't too far off.

What if the mix is super dull? Doing balances first is a waste of time. EQ will change all of it.

I would suggest doing a little bit of everything as you go along.

Put the faders up. What stands out the most? Do the tracks all sound dull?

If so, a stereo EQ might be your best bet. If they sound pretty good, play around with the balances more and see what needs EQ. Maybe just a few tracks need some love. Maybe the whole thing.

There are no rules. Let the tracks in front of you be your guide.
