you've got to be brutally honest with yourself and realize, pro mixes are "bright"the pultec trick is something CLA stole from Clearmountain - in the Bowie "Let's Dance" era.
a good tip is - turn the monitor gain right down - till you can barely hear the mix - can you still sense the bass?? then remix!!! you should only hear transients + sustained sounds.
I've started mixing with my sub OFF ala Bob Clearmountain - and weirdly - the low end translates better.EG - my Bose system goes to 25HZ and is very unforgiving - get the midrange right - and your set - there is reason why these guys STILL mix on NS10's
