Mixing as quick as possible is a note worthy goal. So it's fresh in your mind.

Is it lazy to buss all your background vocals to a fader so that you can EQ, compress and add reverb and delay all in one place? Is it lazy to control their level from there as well?

I think you should do whatever it takes to make the mix sound great quickly. If the whole things sounds dark, put an EQ on the whole thing and make it sound better before you begin.

The Master fader and busses are all there to be used by the mixer as well.
