I read an interview with Paul McCartney and he said that he woke up with the tune 'Yesterday' going on in his head, except the words were 'scrambled eggs' rather than 'yesterday'. He said that he was certain that it was an old tune that his memory had revived because it sounded so old and familiar. Later, in the studio, he sat down at the piano and tapped it out for George Martin. "Have you ever heard this melody?" he asked George. George told him that it didn't ring a bell with him, so Paul sat there and wrote some lyrics. Sheesh.
