Connecting Distressor to Great River

Hello everyone - I've done some research on this but was hoping to get some more personal opinions. I've got an GR ME-1NV going into an EL8X, which is then going into an ISA one for conversion (and which is SPDIF attached to a pro40 for firewire connection into my computer running Logic.)

I'm wondering:

1.) What do most people prefer? MIC---GR---TRS patch out to el8----XLR out to ISA

Or, MIC-----GR-----TRS output to el8---XLR out to ISA

Or, MIC----GR----XLR output to el8----XLR out to ISA

I've been using the third method. Does this mean that, if I hit the HP button on my el8, the low end is being taken out before it's being compressed?

2.) I've often read about people using the compressor for mixing instead of tracking. How would I actually do this? That is to say, suppose I already recorded a vocal take without the el8; how would I then compress that existing recording using the el8?

3.) Any other tricks or advice? (Also, I've found that my effects in Logic Pro work very differently on a vocal track that was recorded with the el8...subtle things like reverb and eq are much more noticeable. Anyone else have that experience? Is it just because the vocal sounds more up front in the mix?)
