Good interfaces for quality preamps vs. quantity

Hi all,

Quick question for you guys that probably doesn't have a quick answer... but people on this forum have helped me make some good decisions with my money so far.

My MOTU 828mkII finally crapped out, so I'm in the market for a new interface. My drummer owns a PreSonus (or something) with 8 preamps that I can use on the rare occasion that I need that many. And I'm looking into getting a BG1 for vocals.

But I'm looking for my best option for 1-2 high-end preamps built into an interface.

I rarely even need two inputs simultaneously. I'm willing to spend up to like a grand for quality, maybe more if someone convinces me it'll make a huge difference. But I suspect at some point (maybe even under a grand) there is a diminishing return on investment, so to speak. And after a certain price point, you seem to be paying for quantity again.

Whenever I need new equipment, I try to make sure I'm purchasing something even more "professional" than before, plus I was pretty irritated with MOTU's (lack of) customer service. So I'd prefer not to work with them again, unless that's the overwhelming consensus.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
