Thanks for your opinion, I've also listened to some online samples and came to a similar conclusion. The VARIS sounded slightly more coloured to my ears in a good way, whereas the Phoenix added more weight but perhaps slightly more transparent.
Would be really useful to get the opinion of someone who has used both units.
