it's pretty much been solved but thanks for your help. i did have the amp positioned on a carpeted floor in a corner so i moved it away into the centre of my bedroom and brought it off the floor. the guitar i use i built myself and i've used it for recording before and it's been fine so i was doubtful it was that. i also upgraded my cheap peavey mic to a 57, i didn't realise how much improvement there is. the peavey mic is a very brittle sounding mic so i think i was over compensating too, the 57 can just handle the lows much better. it's been a long time since i recorded with proper gear i kind of forgot how much mics like that matter.
