I am pretty minimal with gear but I strongly recommend buying an 808. The thing is that since it is analogue, when sampled no sample sounds the same, so if you own one you have endless source material and the ability to effect the sounds on the way in.
I am sure that great tunes can be made with commercial samples. I still recommend having custom samples and your own sound
