I agree, the question is a bit too broad and confusing. That said, if you're after versatility in the sense that "one synth can do it all"-

1) Trillian, which I haven't used personally but from all reports/demos, sounds lovely and covers almost every bass sound imaginable.

2) Alchemy, because it lets you load samples and waveforms and manipulate them to your heart's content, so your only real limitation is your imagination.

3) Reaktor, because it isn't an instrument so much as it is a synth playground.
