Ok, sorry, that was a crap explanation of what I mean.
Right, I'm assuming the plug in inside Ableton as that's what you said. Say it's on Midi track 1 the plug in and the VI, move the midi plug in to a new midi track, make another midi track with the same plug in but with the settings you'd want to switch too. Then change the settings in the I/O section for the Midi channels that contain just the plug ins (not the one with the VI)
Obviously, don't set it to Operator, set it to route to your VI, now when you arm the other track it will use the setting of the midi plug in on it.
