The real question is why are so many people so unhappy and stuck that they seek escapism? That's pretty hard to answer, but IMO its the source of the behavior.

But I also accept that as a fact some percentage of people simply spend their time in the act of consumption rather than creation. Oh well, I'm not gonna begrudge how someone chooses to spend their life. Everything (including what we all do) can be considered a waste of time by someone.
