Ok, but that still doesn't tell me if it needs to be fastened. If I removed the stud at the end of the RC in the first detail...it would be about 1" from the perpendicular wall, but it would then be floating. AND, the RC would be hanging quite far from the last stud...right? This is what I was referring to. What is the maximum length that the floating end should extend? Thanks Rod.

You also want to pay attention to joints in the length of the wall - if the walls are long enough that you are going to need to splice the RC then you should do that as directed - and not use butt joints on the studs themselves.
