i got my grace m101 for under 600 new - used you could probably find well under 500. the little box is clear as clear can be. you might not want the color provided by hardware under 500, so to optimize your sound i'd recommend a clear and transparent pre and using plug-ins for grit (such as any of the waves eddie kramer stuff). that way you can dial in color to taste rather than being married to the sound of your pre. itb eq can help you find color too.
