In your original post - it's impossible to comment without hearing the particular kick same about which you are talking. Compression is tailored to the source signal. Hard knee for some sounds, soft knee for others.

If you post examples, I think people will be able to offer suggestions.
Think an 808 kick with short decay triggering a sidechain on a dirty reese electro bassline. The compressor has a sidechain EQ. The question may be moot since the pedal DOES do hard-knee compression if you crank the ratio knob.


A guy I know on Talkbass has all the equipment to do the experiment, waiting to hear the results.. I guess his roland rhythm-77 drum machine from 1977 has a pretty weak kick so he'll have to improvise a bit.
