If you are doing the squashed
to shit room thing, try putting a high pass filter in front of the compressor. If you start getting too much rumble, engage it until you find the right balance of explosive snare, washy cymbal sustain, and overblown kick. I find this especially useful if you tracked a band live and you have a little bass amp bleed and it starts seeping into the room mic. Remember that compressing is as much turn the quiet stuff up as it is turning the loud stuff down.
