Take a minute and read my last response. In the spec section there are "8 simultaneous analog inputs." The 4 mic pres are included in those 8. It's not 4 pres + 8 line inputs.
For 8 pres, you could use the 4 included plus something like an API 3124+ connected to line inputs 4-8.
In order to get up to 12 ANALOG inputs, you'd have to get something like the 4-710d and input those 4 channels via digital means (ADAT light pipe). Or buy an AD converter for your pres.

Also, the whole point of plugins is so you don't have to commit. You can't 'print' with plugins on the way in... As someone stated earlier, plugins occur after the AD stage. One of the selling features is that you can use the plugins with minimal latency for tracking or live use (in console mode). You can also use plugins via the traditional means.
There's no inserts per say... However, you can insert external hardware loops.
