For a mono room I often like a mic on a short stand, looking at the snare shell about 4-6 feet (maybe more/?). It helps give the drums a foundation. you could even lower it or tape it to the floor. I'm looking for tone and size on the snare to really help the backbeat, but it often does great things for the whole set.
