I would encourage the drummer to describe the sound, not the gear. Wet vs dry, wide vs. narrow, close vs. distant, present vs. fat, punchy vs. soft, etc. Then, use whatever method and gear will achieve that.

As far as mono room: It can be really good in good rooms and useless in bad rooms. If you want a whole kit sound without too much room, 4-5 feet in front of kit 3-4 feet high is good for capturing the boom and punch of snare, kick, and toms but not too much cymbals. You can use the height and angle to "mix" in more kick relative to cymbals. Down a hall or back in a corner of a bigger room can be used for snare reverb and great depth. Totally depends and that's why you need to ask the group what feel/vibe/soound they want. Good luck!
