The RP8 are good bang for the buck, good low end response although the mid detail isn't all there compared to the V series. They get real loud if that matters to you.
The RP5 are a good budget monitor, with a little bit of hype going on the lower mids / bass range. They have a bit of a soft sound to them, and can't be pushed to very loud levels without the amp giving up. For under $200 a pair they do a lot though.
The Tascam VL-X5 are simply a better balanced speaker, with a linear response, and about as much truth and honesty you are going to find in the sub $300 category. They get loud too and stay clean at loud volumes also. In a lot of ways I think home studio guys are better off with these even vs the RP8 style stuff.
