The difffrenece between the two is striking. The fat head has a tight focused bottom and mid. The mxl has a wide unfocused bottom and a crisper top. For my use they are two difrent flavors. I prefer the Fat head for my 4x12 and spot mic on drums. The Mxl for my upper room mic w/ a cut at the bottom to control sum of the low end. The MXL is a good mic if your willing to mod it, but staight out the box youill find out the problems in the mix. The head basket resonace will stand out. It did for me. The fat head is great out of the box, nice and solid sounding.
interesting findings and experimentation! cool to read some fresh (to me) ideas on these two mic designs.
