Personally...there WAS a difference. If anyone is taking their itb mix to an outboard piece and bringing it back in they'll notice a difference. There's more dimension, which can be heard clearly through a good pair of grados or reference quality headphones. Thats what I would describe it as...a more realistic and 3d sound, not "scooped" like some people have said.
