They need a lot of power and will easily push many consumer-grade headphone outputs into distortion. I use an inexpensive ART headphone amp and that works OK but there is probably something better out there.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I absolutely love my 240DF's. Used 'em since '90. Got a bunch of over hyped, loud 4506's for tracking, but the 240DF's are for listening. I feel like they are the headphone equivalent of my JBL 4408's, which I also love - neutral, but really nice sounding. Not hyped. Given the choice I would never mix on phones, but if I had to I would pick these. What brought me to this forum was a Google search for a used pair, since both my old pairs are dying...
