That mic is sic...to put it mildly. You gotta rent it at least once, or rent a studio that has one.
As for your converter question, it would make a difference in the sound quality. One way around it is to go digital into the 002 from your keyboard or whatever, via spdif or whatever it has. Sometimes you can't help it though...
