I don't think scooping the mids is a good idea. Instead, people should only EQ what needs to be EQ'ed and do it according to the needs of each instrument and sound. These sweeping generalizations are just not good. I've heard a lot of tunes that sounded gutted, distant, weak, and brittle because the low mids were scooped by some idiotic engineer.
It's like putting effects on the master buss; only do it if it actually improves the tune, and usually it's better to do it in subgroups or in individual channels instead for better control.
No need to trash the whole mix over somebody's "great idea". And besides....
Don't mimick other people's bad choices.
