You will likely benefit from having a Thunderbolt external drive to record to, that way your Firewire input is only bringing in audio, and not also writing audio, which uses the same bandwidth. You don't want to use the drive in the computer itself.

On the other hand, though, if you are only doing a couple of inputs at a time, you should be fine no matter what you do.
