Louder mixes tend to translate to louder masters, with less damage to the existing balances. Maybe you should consider a remix. Try distributing the low end differently, controlling the transients, or maybe just keep the mix you're happy with and accept that it has a "loudness potential" (to borrow a fellow GSer's phrase) that has been fully tapped, and that you're better served by a good sounding master than a loud one.
