E-Mu 1616m need an outboard pre?

Hello,

please excuse my newbness if there is already a thread on this topic. I looked but found nothing to my avail.

So I just bought a 1616m, waiting for it in the mail. It seems like alot of you gearslutterz seem to have pretty extensive knowledge about this mystical box. Now the A/Ds are supposed to be mastering grade, ok, great but what about the pres?

do i need to buy an external single channel pre to make this thing punch?

im doing hip-hop (just like your grandma and every one else), Im thinking about getting a Studio Projects VTB1 and swapping the tube for a vintage tube _______ (suggestions welcome).

Im going to be recording Vox, Guitar, Bass, and Input from turntable. Mainly interested in Vox.

FYI, I understand a 150 dollar preamp isnt going to be life changing, just want a punch and presence to help Waves do its job. Im going to be using Wave Diamond to bat clean-up.
