The same can be said of lots of gear nowadays that's heralded as "vintage" or "classic". Guitars, drums, mics, cars, houses, etc.....there was good and bad from every era.
It's funny, but with recording, there seems to be more of this going on. I guess it's just that there's such a "blackart" to recording. You can put a person with beginner or average skills in a room with top notch gear and the recording can still sound like ass. Put someone with above average skills in a room with a few decent mics, mackie board and an adat and you could record some nice tracks. The beginner seems to think that they're always needing more gear to get better recordings when it's primarily the material being recorded, or the players, or most of the time, their skills that are lacking.
All this talk about whether or not a 57 is a decent snare mic is crazy. Same with the PM1000 modules.
