Sqye has nailed it. From the music industry perspective, there is only one country. Even if you don't live in the USA, if you want to make "country" music, you have to pretend that you live in the good 'ol U.S. of A.

Otherwise, if you are of English extraction, it's "folk", and anything else is "ethnic" or "world".
