lastly, i had a crazy idea, i haven't tried this, but would it be possible to sample the rimshot of the 707 and use that as a trigger out? or is a voltage thing like CV?

It might work, try sampling the actual trigger output. I did it with my DR-110's trigger (sampled on to a Korg ES-1) and it worked nicely. The trigger sounds like a short popping noise.
