Attenuators/dBs/and watts (oh my)

I saw a thread a while ago regarding attenuators. Someone had posted some numbers regarding wattage. For instance (and this is not a real quote, just the idea) "a 40 watt amp, 8ohms, with 6db attenuation is like the amp being an x-watt amp.)

I have tried and tried to find that again. But I can't. I'm trying to find out of if 12db of attenuation will be enough for my 40 watt Hot Rod Deluxe. I know there have been other threads about this, I just can't quite find what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help you can give. (also, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.)
