"Select which digital I/O port on your audio interface enclosure is active by selecting an option under Digital Format. Depending on the type of interfaces in your system, choices includeAES/EBU, S/PDIF, and Optical (S/PDIF). Selecting Optical (S/PDIF) resets the Optical I/O port (which is, by default, eight channels of ADAT Optical I/O) to two channels of S/PDIF Optical I/O. (The 96i I/O supports stereo S/PDIF RCA digital input and output only.) For
more information about Pro Tools|HD enclosure and card ports, refer to the guide for your audio interface. "
1. p.53 of the getting starting manual: Digital Format: clicking ADAT/spdif resets ADAT/spdif from 8 channels to 2 channels (REALLY SILLY ON THE SOFTWARE DESIGNER'S PART, EH!)
You'd intuitively think that if you're inputting from ADAT, that you click the ADAT not AES/EBU setting because after all, your inputting an ADAT optical signal not an AES/EBU one.
AVID should make this radiobutton say "ADAT 2 channel not 8"
2. What you need to do is click "Digital Format: AES/EBU or sp/dif, then MANUALLY change all INPUTS TO ADAT1-2, ADAT3-4, ADAT 5-6, ADAT 7-8. I had already setup my IO paths in the other window.
3. Many shout outs to Brian of Black Lion Audio for helping me solve this problem after using their microclock to sync the 96, 96i, and Presonus Digimax 96K
