can't agree that it's 'everything' to do with the cymbals, although they're certainly critical.

i'd wager that the most important factor in what this guy is after is mic placement. it sounds like he prefers the mics a bit back from the kit in a room that breathes without slapping.

not so new's post is a gem. the only twist i can add is that the best drum recordings, to my ears, seem to get most of their sound from several feet off the kit, with close mics augmenting the overheads rather than the other way around.
