i want to get a mic that works really well for recording a full band (drums, bass, gtr, keys, etc... no vocals) the kind of thing where you just put one mic up and position everyone around it to get a good balance. like those pictures you see where everyone is in a perfect horse shoe.
what is a good mic for this? are SDC like avenson and Earthworks good? or is it better to use a LDC with multipattern like a U87?
earthworks claims that there mics are great for recording rehearsals. is the omni band capture method (i just made that up) just as well excecuted or perhaps even better when 2 mics are used. i fell like that would complicate things. i like to be able to focus on the realtionship between one mic and the band instead of one mic with another mic which together are with a band.
