Unless you're running high track counts of >96k, Firewire is perfect for real time recording. Very mature and reliable. The only downside is that Firewire drives aren't SMART compatible.
That said, while I like the portability of external Firewire drives, I like having internal SATA available as well and the overall expandability options of the Mac Pro.
When Apple rolls out Mac Minis with Lightpeak and quad-core processors (2011-12?)... I think we'll see the tower case start to disappear... (because most audio/video DSP and hard drive i/o duties will all fly over lightpeak, negating the need for PCI cards)
