One reason would be that the bandwidth of usb2.0 and firewire are 60% and 50% (respectively) the amount of bandwidth of ATA100...

that said, i wouldn't buy this drive. I ordered my MacBook with a 7200rpm SATA internal drive. its great to have alot of space and all, but 5400rpm/ATA is becoming old tech.
