Not agreeing or disagreeing, just a comment; some producers are known for what they put in, but this kind of production is associated with Cash/Rubin because of what's not there. Interesting.
I was listening to some Neil Diamond songs on a greatest hits package and I was really stunned by some of the recordings; particularly "Soolaimon" and "Song Sung Blue". Then I bought some earlier LP's and found that the versions of the same songs were nowhere near as amazing.
While I have enjoyed Johnny Cash's prior output, the Rubin sessions have a really haunting quality that I think JC hadn't previously touched on, whereas I think the Neil Diamond recordings are very close to ideal (at least in my opinion.)
