I agree with this thought.
When you look at synths, I think most stuff has been done and IMHO the more interesting development is coming from the software market.
Without getting into a massive debate as to which sounds better, from what I can see there seems to be more modulation ability and customisation of how a sound can be modified and shaped in the software world.
Things like multi point envelopes/LFO's for example would be a tad difficult to control without a big GUI that you would find on a soft synth.
