The producer (Jimmy Miller, praise be upon him) himself described to me how on a few tracks after the band had, gone, he sat at the drum kit played along and nodded to the engineer when to punch him and the "new drums" in.... all just to fix a ragged drum outro to a song..
Technical perfection was not a maxim for that record, but soul WAS.
