gonna come right in here with this. just got the combo r5 & record 1.5
love reason. was working with 3 primarily as 4 was a horrendous piece of crap and sucked all the fun that 3 had completely out of the program and became something different and terrible. recycle is cumbersome and record just looked like a neutered d.a.w. to me.
then they hit me with the upgrade deal, and i saw the kong and sampling. hook line and sinker i took it.
everything is great in 5 & 1.5. but to compare record to a d.a.w. is just unfair. record is still in it's infancy and has alot of great things while at the same time missing many critical things to make it a program that could compete with other programs of that nature. but if your a reason user it's a no brainer picking up record. it expands your reason experience beyond the box. with record you can basically pluck the reason devices out of the program and into your rack for external instruments to use. better mixing options.
BUT:
no groups. really? yes really. even after two upgrades, no groups. there's ways to get around it sure, but there cumbersome.
creating one channel at a time. seriously. the tool window allows you to keep double clicking the channel you want how ever many of them you need, but it would be so much easier with a drop down menu to type a number into and just have them. you can also just put 10 or so channels in your start template and have them ready. but still. pain in the ass.
you have to map your control surfaces for every song or make it on the start template. not a huge deal, but again.
no backwards compatibility. back up those files boys! once you make the jump it's solid! and record 1.5 will only work with reason 5. bringing me to:
3 programs delivering you the functionality of 1. why not just make a reason suite? 1 program, 1 price?
destructive recording. you can and will record over something and lose it forever if your not careful. bringing us to:
no trashes folder. remember cubase where you could retrieve your trashes in case you might have deleted something you needed? not here.
recording a full band is cumbersome due to the fact of editing and recording functions. it just isn't as smooth try it out.
but reason 5 and record 1.5 are great and indispensable for the one man project. it's still a good program to have for sequencing and the like. record needs some work but is a great addition to 5, what it was intended to be. vst au guys are just gonna have to keep rewiring.
