I think iLok and a serial number would be a good idea for those that don't like to use iLok. I know some people won't buy a software that needs iLok. I'm the exact opposite though. I won't buy a plugin unless I can have my license on my iLok because I go from my home studio to the commercial studio quite a bit.
Again, as far as worrying if it gets lost, stolen, or accidentally broken. Treat it like a vintage U47 and you won't have any issues.
