That IS a part of it.
I have seen guitarists pick up a bass guitar that already is recording sounding really good and make it sound bright, small and flimsy.
Part of what bass players work on IS making the note sound 'right' in every position.
hope this helps, some. | I'm a guitar player and have also played bass, but it not's my "main" instrument. It usually takes me some time to get the sound to sit right on the bass if I havn't played it for a while. It's usually trying to shake guitar habits and play the bass with the right technique. And I tried all kinds of diff. techniques to get the right tone but always end up using my own messed up way to do it... but it works. You need to be intimate with the instrument at hand to really get it to sing for you.
