Wow. So I'm playing around with some of the tricks I've learned on here in the 3xOSC plugin in FL studio (fairly simple and has all the specs you've all recommended to start with) and I'm already getting some wild sounds I didn't think I'd be able to replicate/create. Will continue to venture onwards into the musical abyss!
