A 58 is great live for vocals and sax. BUT, a 57 is great on gtr and snare live and in the studio...... also works well on toms and can be used on a kik or bass in a pinch. I have even used them as a bunch of general pickup mics for an (get this) orchestra! Of course not a first (or second) choise, BUT, the point is that a 57 is really versitile. You will use it alot, kind of 'not worth selling' when it's time to trade up.
BUT.....if you need a workhorse for LIVE vox - then buy the 57...
