I made a bunch of simmilar things. They were VERY HEAVY. Then again, I did layer 1/4" plywood with drywall.

If there is a plastic/acrylic supplier near you, you can easily make clear plastic gobos. You can drill holes in the plexiglass and attach hinges. Add a gasket to cover the hinged gap.

This will be pretty heavy also.

For light stuff that door idea was good.
